Mmm...fall

Fall foods, no doubt, are my favorite. Any baked apple dish is a winner in my mind, and do I need to even talk about pumpkin bars, chili, or casseroles? With the leaves turning colors and the weather getting cooler, my taste buds have shifted and my oven is calling my name. If you ask my mom she'll tell you my cooking is not high on my talent list, but I love to bake and now that I have a little more time and a few extra cooks in the kitchen, I figured no better day to cure the cravings.

My sister has some awesome fruit trees in her yard and last week her apple crisp left me craving more, so with an abundance of apples and hungry tummies Emma and I decided to kick off the baking season with an apple pie. We must have really been craving it, because we made it with eating apples instead of waiting for the baking apples...it was delicious just the same.

Since my grandma passed away every time I cook I reference her cookbooks and recipe cards just to see how she did it. I always love when I come to a page that is smeared with remnants of ingredients and wonder who she was baking for and laugh at how much better her food would have tasted. It's amazing how one little finger smudge can stir up so many memories!

My number one helper in the kitchen today...chef Emma. She was a pro at peeling the apples so you would think that she would speed up the process, however, I believe we had to peel twice as many apples since she wouldn't stop eating them!

Somebody is a little excited to measure the flour for the crumble.
Mmmm...our finished product. Yep, that would be flour all over Emma's face...she's officially a chef now.

It's only good if it boils over, right!?

I LOVE the excitement Emma displays! Can I spend a day with your family? ;) Making pies is serious baking. Way to go!
