Caucus 2012

I found this post among my drafts...forgot to share it so it's not exactly "timely."

Although I am annoyed by the never-ending phone calls asking for my support or questioning my backing of a certain candidate, I love that this caucus sparked an adorable conversation between Grace and I on the way home from school today. I will not be one to "rock the caucus." I am not a registered republican and although I can hear Mrs. Winters, (econ teacher extraordinaire), reminding me of my civic duty, I will not be out in support of either the republicans or democrats tonight. However, Grace has been discussing the caucus at school and informed me on the way home of who Barack Obama is, and how, "just in case you didn't know, mom, he makes the rules." So we discussed the candidates, who might be a good president, etc. Then, she asked why there is only one girl running. We talked about how there has never been a woman president before and she decided right there that this should be rectified. It was so refreshing to hear her, "I can do anything" monologue. She talked about the rules she would make if she were president...my favorite, chocolate ice cream whenever you want it, and how she would only move to the White House if we could come with her. When I informed her she would have to wait until she was 35, she got worried. "Well, just promise me that you won't be president before me, mom, so that I can be the first girl president." I think I can handle that! When we got home we read this book that my sister gave Grace for her 3rd birthday...

It is a cute book about electoral votes and in the end when all the boys voted for the boy candidate and all the girls voted for the girl candidate it came down to one boy, representing Wyoming (3 electoral votes), who decided to vote for the best candidate. Grace won!

I can see her growing up to do big things...who knows, maybe even president. As for Emma, no presidency for her...she said when she grows up she wants to be Santa Claus. Reach for the stars, little ladies!
