For us crazy Catholics, the Lenten Season has arrived. Talk about an interesting way to start off Lent with the Pope resigning! Lent is a time of preparation for Easter, and many people make a "resolution" of sorts as a matter of discipline by giving something up for 40 days. (Technically Lent lasts 46 days but Sundays are supposed to be joyful even during the somber season of Lent so they aren't counted. As a practicing Catholic my whole life I never actually stopped to do the math and this last fact blew my mind a few years ago).
Anyway, though there are numerous things that I should and could give up for Lent, I really struggled with what to do without. I don't drink coffee, only have the occasional pop, and as my family approaches "birthday row" (3 birthdays during Lent) I remember how sad Emma was when I didn't partake in cake eating one year because I had given up sweets. I decided it wouldn't be food related. Though I definitely cut down my eating during Lent by not snacking between meals.
I thought about giving up screen time - oh bliss...but then I realized I would be fired as my job requires a lot of screen time.
I thought about social media. I don't need FB, Twitter, the blog, etc. However, all of my Xavier updates (scores, birthdays, achievements) come through Twitter and they have just started an awesome new Twitter @saintsamongus where people post positive comments anonymously about people in the Xavier community, so I didn't feel right giving that up.
I thought about TV, but we don't really watch it, so it wouldn't be much of a sacrifice.
So, I am going simple. I am challenging myself to fulfill the same Lenten promise as my children. We each have a Lenten Cross Calendar that we are going to fill. It is very simple. You choose a good deed for the day and once it is completed you color your cross accordingly.
Green - I said an extra prayer.
Purple - I helped someone.
Red - I did something good that was hard for me to do.
Yellow - I did what I was supposed to do without being told
I am hoping for a lot of rainbow crosses this Lent. Do you give anything up for Lent?
