Happy 1 month birthday, Will!! We're defying the odds at Casa Richmond. Will's medical team is completely stunned that he is doing so well and has made it this far. Though they keep reminding us that his health is still "bottle to bottle" we feel like he has made such incredible progress we can't help but be more hopeful than that.
He gives us signs each day that he doesn't plan on leaving us anytime soon. His head has almost completely healed! Though we still keep it patched to keep the skin moist, we no longer are worried about infection or keeping it covered. I won't post the first pictures of his head as they are kind of graphic, but here is his head at week 2 and week 4. It's amazing what 2 weeks of healing can do.
Week 2 - Will's head healed so much the first 2 weeks. We still worried about infection so we used a patch with silver infused in it for an antibacterial agent that wouldn't damage the healthy cells around it, but it still seemed to irritate the skin around his wound so we switched patches.
Week 4 - Will's head is almost completely healed already. We are now using a Vaseline patch to keep the skin moist so that it will continue to heal. There were days where it literally seems to change right before our eyes.
Will's lungs continue to stay clear, no doubt from all the exercise they are getting. He has some pretty good crying spells lately, but I feel comforted knowing all that crying is squeezing the crud out of his lungs and helping them to stay clear. His apnea spells are only lasting about 20 seconds now and they are becoming less and less frequent...only a few times an hour.
Will continues to open his eyes more and more each day. They are opening wider and staying open for longer periods of time. Yesterday they were open for almost an hour and we saw him blink for the first time. He continues to have a lot of build up in them, so its a challenge to keep them clear, but we are enjoying seeing more of his beautiful BLUE eyes.
He has also been flexing his muscles a lot lately. He is getting more and more active and surprising us by his strength. He spends most of his time curled up tight so we love when he stretches and yawns and shows us how much he can really move. His hands are open almost as often as they are clenched now so the girls love having him grab on to their fingers.
Of course, we celebrate BIG for birthdays around here, so his one month birthday was no exception. We busted out the cake and candles, sang a little "happy birthday" and made some big wishes. It has been such an amazing adventure with this sweet little guy, we can't wait to see what the next month brings! Happy birthday, sweet boy!
