Although we're not exactly "unpacked" from the move, we took off for our annual June road trip. This year we headed south to the Gulf. This year is pretty disorganized since time was not on our side in planning, but we are excited none-the-less. My sister prefers to just get in the car and go, so although I feel it is far more relaxing to have a plan and not have to make decisions on the go, I am taking a page out of her book and giving up on feeling ill-prepared and just letting the trip take us where it wants.
Mark had high hopes of getting off work at 12:30 so that he could watch Grace’s band concert and then we could take off for vacation. However, after the concert he had to head back to work to finish up, so it was 4pm before he was home and we could hit the road. After some comical packing, a broken mirror (7 yrs bad luck?) and some last minute gardening we were off to Kansas City! We ate dinner in the car to save time (and the girls love the 4 course meals).
An hour before we are supposed to leave. Oops, hopefully that 7 years of bad luck superstition doesn't come to fruition on our trip with a tropical storm brewing in the Gulf!
Locked and loaded...this is what our next 15 days will look like in the rear-view mirror!
We arrived in Kansas City and decided to stretch our legs at Washington Park and Union Station (free and open until midnight…added bonus). Union Station was amazing with its high sprawling corridors and beautiful clocks. Out front, we started the fountain tour with the Carl J. Dipaco fountain and then headed inside for a little history lesson.
Though we got in late and a lot of it was closed off, the corridors were beautiful and we were still able to read up on a lot of the history behind the building.
We loaded up and headed to Overland Park to catch up with my cousin’s family. Though most of them were out of town, Eric was a gracious host and we spent the night at their beautiful home which allowed some extra space to stretch out and a little more time to catch up. It was a fantastic nights sleep and a great start to our vacation.
Of course the girls were in love with their kitty, Lucy and had to try out the balance beam in the dining room before we left!
