I'm a little late in posting, per the usual, but I didn't want the first ever Catholic EdCamp in the nation to go unrecognized. I spent a Saturday at MMU checking out what Catholic Education had in store for the future, and I'm excited.
While many of my teacher friends headed to a much larger EdCamp in Iowa City and probably had a far more productive day than I did, I was excited to be a part of something that I think will be HUGE in the future. EdCamps are incredible...it is an "unconference"...no boring Keynote Speakers, sessions that you thought sounded awesome - but 5 minutes in you realize they are not, or speakers talking to you with their "elementary teacher voices." Don't like a session - leave it. Think something looks intriguing - check it out. You are free to collaborate with some of the best teachers in education. Awesome, right?! However, a key component to this awesomeness is a large crowd. The first Catholic EdCamp...poorly attended. What would have been a phenomenal day, was in competition with other EdCamps across the state making the day less productive.
However, I did not leave unchanged. There were educators from as far as Minnesota in attendance and I spent an incredible afternoon discussing the power of e-portfolios and what it could do for our school with some of my fellow teachers. We also got to check out a Sphero and one of my co-workers won an Osmo. The give-aways were incredible and I definitely left excited by new possibilities for my classroom.
