Indianapolis Motor Speedway

This morning we took off about 4:30am. The impending storm was a great wake up call as the thunder and lightning woke the girls up, so it was easy to get them from the warmth of their beds to the packed and ready to go van. Mark had a tough time getting away from work this week, so he came to bed about 1am so the alarm at 3:30 was a bit rough on him. The early morning departure was worth it though, as while the four of them slept for a few more hours, I drove us out of Iowa with a beautiful lightening show and minimal traffic. We pulled into Indianapolis and headed to the Indy 500 museum. Though we don’t watch races, it was awesome to see the scale of the track as we walked under it, to walk through all of the cars dating back to 1915, and to get a better understanding of the importance of the Indianapolis Speedway to the evolution of the automobile.
All three girls ready to get their Indy on.

This was a favorite for sure!

Rick Mears' 1988 car. He is one of three men to be a four-time winner of the Indy 500. The girls were ecstatic to be able to sit in a real race car!

Harold hooked us up with a ton of automobile knowledge. Though the indy cars were cool, we all really liked seeing the evolution of the car. One of our favorites was the 1915 pace car...it went a whopping 89 miles per hour! The girls did, however, pass their quiz on what each of the flags for racing signify. Do you know what each color represents?
