This morning was our last day on
Hilton Head. Mark and the girls headed down to swim while I packed up and
checked out of the house. Since check out was so early, I got us all packed and
loaded and then we checked out but continued to swim and have a leisurely
morning. We took off about lunch time and headed to Savannah. My favorite giggle from this morning...Norah has been asking to play in the cat pool every day and today we finally figured out what she meant. We've been calling the shallow pools the "kiddie pools" and she thought we were talking about kitties. Now we know why she keeps referring to the cat pool!
Since we arrived in Savannah before
our hotel was ready, we headed out to Tybee Island. We considered staying here,
so we wanted to scope out what it looked like. We decided to visit the
lighthouse which subsequently also included admission into the Tybee Island
Museum which is housed in Battery Garland of Fort Screven. Within the walls of
the Battery, seven rooms contain artifacts and exhibits covering more than five
centuries of history. Though the girls are a little young for a lot of this
history, I was surprised to see how much Grace read of the plaques and paid
attention to the exhibits. She really is starting to like learning about
history.
I love this face on Emma...always looking like she's up to no good.
The lighthouse was definitely a
highlight, and climbing the 178 stairs to the top on a 101 degree day was worth
it with the breeze and the view that awaited us at the top. Just a few fun
facts for the weather today…Savannah is in the middle of a heat wave. The UV
index was at 11, (this is as high as it goes), the waves were at 2 feet with 7 second intervals. I love
listening to the weather reports in the south as they all include beach
information. Anyway…we spent a few hours brushing up on our history of this
beautiful lighthouse and the families who maintained it.
Emma is slowly but surely conquering her fear of heights. She was adamant that she wanted to go to the top, but her little legs were shaking with every step she took. She wasn't about to let go of that rail, but she walked the entire top of the lighthouse looking out at the view. When we got back to the bottom she said..."That was VIEWtiful! Such a clever little girl!
Norah did a great job climbing all 178 steps to the top. I think we all got a little dizzy walking them back down though.
After the lighthouse tour we also toured the cottage where the light-keeper and his family lived. Grace got a kick out of this telephone!
