New Mellary Abbey

Sunday we finished off Will's birthday celebration week with a trip to New Melleray Abbey. This beautifully peaceful oasis holds our hearts as Will's casket was handcrafted by the Monks that reside here. We celebrated mass at the Abbey and then walked around the grounds to enjoy the peace that they have to offer.
Mass was beautiful and the natural light that poured in over the incense that hung in the air gave a mystical appearance that brought a whole new feel to the mass.

Such an incredibly beautiful day for a visit. There are about 30 monks that live at the Abbey and they spend a large part of their day in prayer, work and contemplation. Some work at Trappist caskets, others tending to the garden and groves. They begin their day at 3:30AM with Vigils and have a strict routine that carries them through to the end of their day at 7:30 when they end with Compline (night prayer).
