Christmas #3

We woke up at my parents house, had a yummy breakfast and then went to wish Will a Merry Christmas. It was a little colder visiting Christmas day than it was Christmas eve, but with ornaments, berries, decorations and a mystery Christmas hat, the warmth and love surrounding Will was definitely felt. Plus, since a rock broke our windshield on the drive in, this visit helped us keep things in perspective and not sweat the small stuff.

I can't imagine how magical Christmas must be in Heaven.

Off to Manchester to celebrate some more!

Hazel wore her best Christmas collar for the festivities.

These 2 had so much fun playing together.

Let the shenanigans begin.

Guess Who and Harry Potter Trivia were hits up north.

Johnson holiday party

Last weekend we headed to the Johnson's for their 10th annual holiday party. I can't believe it has been 10 years (and lots of kiddos) since the creation of this neighborhood get together. Since then, only 3 families still even live in the old neighborhood...the rest have all moved! It just goes to show the importance a neighborhood can have on where you choose to spend your time and who you allow to help you raise your children. What started as a few fun neighbors, solidly grew into a few great friends!

Different neighborhoods couldn't separate these two.
None of us still live in the same house we did when we first met, yet we still come up with lots of reasons to get together.

The King and Me

Emma was so excited for her Christmas program, "The King and Me" this year. She and her friend, Josie, got to sing a duet [basically one line] this year (which meant giving up recess time to practice, so it was a BIG deal). The concert was cute and she loves to sing, but she really can't wait until next year when she gets to have all the lines. This one has no fear of the stage! :)
Looking lovely in her Christmas best.
These 2 with a microphone and captive audience are trouble!

Angels we have heard

Norah spent the hour leading up to her Christmas concert perfecting her curtsy and twirling in her dress this year. This girl loves any reason to get fancy and accessorize, so the night before the concert, she picked out the perfect red headband to match her red Christmas shoes so she could maximize her time spent dressed up.
Her Christmas concert "Angels we have heard" was adorable, as usual, and she loved every minute of anticipation and preparation leading up to the big night. Though crazy in her own element, she gets pretty shy in front of a crowd, so it was fun to see her nervous fidgeting as she sang and performed with her classmates.

Traditions

Christmas is non-existent on the blog this year, and today is the day that it needs to be remedied. I know that the holidays are hard for people who have lost someone dear - I understand this better than ever this year - but I want to make sure that it is not a year that goes undocumented on the blog. The month of December has more blog posts entitled DNP  (do not publish) than any month. Leading up to Christmas I had a lot of anger and confusion. Losing Will didn't challenge my faith in God so much as it challenged my faith in people. I have learned so much about relationships through losing Will, and from all of the things that I have read to help us through our grief, I think this fits my grief the best.

"You may never know who your true friends are until life throws you an unwelcome curve-ball. When this happens and the friends or family you thought would help carry you through don't, you go through stages of grief. It's devastating. As time passes, you can either be resentful, bitter and heartbroken, or you can be so incredibly thankful that you've learned a valuable life lesson."

Right before Christmas I had Mark read my DNP posts and he agreed that he felt much the same. I was shocked by this as, unlike me, he didn't harbor any bitter feelings about it or let it bother him. He helped me realize that some people never have the luxury of learning who they can truly trust and lean on and now we know. He helped me shift my heart and head in how I view my relationships so that I can truly appreciate those relationships for what they are, whether it be a true relationship or a lifestyle relationship, they all have value. He helped me realize that I was letting a few people overshadow the hundreds of loving and caring people that bent over backward to make sure that we had everything we needed to best care for Will.

This confession during Advent brought such healing and allowed me to enter into Christmas with a much lighter heart. Though Will's absence at Christmas left us wanting more, it did not overtake the beauty of the celebration or its importance. As a parent I try really hard to make sure my actions are such that would make the girls proud, as they see my every move. Will, however, can see my heart, so I must work even harder now to make him proud. I'm so thankful to have Mark by my side to remind me of this, and so thankful that he helped me see this before entering into Christmas so I could set down my bitterness and find peace. Though Christmas took a little extra effort this year, we all were able to find joy.

Though the dinner table still feels wrong with an empty chair, the mantle felt complete this year. The girls had fun filling Will's stocking with their favorite memories of 2016. It was a great way to allow us to remember him and also give everyone the freedom to grieve as much or as little as they needed. I can't wait to read them all next year at Christmas and add to it each year. I love that we have a new tradition that, (1) began when we became a family of 6, (2) will always include Will, and (3) will ensure that his stocking is full at Christmas just like the others.

Christmas up north

Christmas morning we were spoiled with a pancake breakfast before we hit the road for home. After a stop off to swap food and gifts, we headed north to celebrate with Mark's family and indulge on some homemade ravioli. After lunch we opened gifts and then us girls spent the afternoon playing Wits and Wagers...one of my favorites! It was such a relaxing couple of days with Mark's family.

Even Hazel wanted in on the family photo!

Harry Potter ornament and Bertie Botts Beans...perfect considering she read the whole HP series this year!

Ninja erasers for this little ninja were a big hit!

A Tree Lot Christmas

Emma did a lot of preparation for her Christmas Program. She was cast as Abigail in the play and she had a ton of lines that she delivered wonderfully. It gave her a whole new appreciation of the stage, and really helped her gain confidence in speaking in front of a large group. With over 300 people in attendance, she didn't miss a beat.
She really liked being in the spot light and having a microphone all to herself. Watch out world...she loves to perform.
Emma's teacher is so great. She told her how proud she was of Emma and it absolutely made her night!

It wouldn't surprise me to see these 2 on the stage in future productions...they both have a love of the audience.

In a Galilee Far Far Away

Grace's Christmas program was so cute this year. With lights and special effects it was quite entertaining.
Before the concert, of course, she needed a picture with Sheila.

Curling her hair and getting all dressed up is definitely at the top of Grace's highlight list.

Singing her heart out!

Norah's Christmas Pageant

Norah had fun at her Preschool Christmas program. She got a little stage fright, but sang most of the songs. She was definitely excited to have a fan club in the audience to watch her.

The students all made adorable reindeer antlers to wear while they sang, but for some reason, Norah didn't want to wear them. Come to find out...she didn't want to cover up her beautiful bow. :)

Norah has a fabulous teacher who really makes each kid feel so special. Norah has had such a great year and is surrounded by great friends.

Norah also did a little Christmas pageant for her Care class. She enjoyed singing the songs, but really liked all of the activities that came after the program.

Santa Claus is coming to town!

As much as we try to keep the focus of Christmas on Jesus' birth, we don't cut out the fun of Santa. Our elf on the shelf, 'Tiny' still reports back to the North Pole each night for the fun and excitement of finding him hiding around our house each morning. Though we don't hear much talk about Santa, they love waking up each morning to figure out what kind of shenanigans Tiny has been up to while they sleep.
Our Santa visit was short lived. The girls thought it was funny that so many people dress up to help Santa listen to children's wish lists and report them back. Especially this Santa who didn't quite fill the suit and used books to expand his not so 'bowl-full-of-jelly' belly.

Norah was ready to tell Santa all about the blue watch she wanted. Santa worked his magic. It wasn't blue, but she had a cute little monkey watch hanging in her stocking Christmas morning.

Christmas Day

We woke up Christmas morning and had a lazy morning of pancakes and more pampering from grandma. We then packed up and headed north for more Christmas festivities. We had more delicious food with Mark's family and ...gulp... more gifts. Followed up by cards and Farkle, we had a fun-filled afternoon.
Cuddled up and ready for a snuggly afternoon.

Ready to paint. Thanks for the awesome gifts!

The bunnies off of grandma's tree are always coveted. Apparently, so is my lap...

Of course, it's not Christmas without the traditional "Merry Christmas" dance party in the kitchen. I know not everyone wants to participate, but it is one of my favorite parts of the day! Norah definitely had her booty shake down for this years dance party...the bigger girls needed the living room for all of their "dance moves." They can be dangerous without proper space. :)

Christmas Day

Christmas day we left my parents house to make the 2 hr. trek to Mark's family. We were greeted with more great food -- turkey, ham and all the fixings -- including their traditional oyster dressing. After a yummy meal the girls opened more presents and had fun playing their afternoon away.
Lydia and the girls with the bunnies from Grandma's Christmas tree.

Norah loved her new "accessories" for her baby from Eric and Elizabeth.

We also had our traditional "Merry Christmas" dance party in the kitchen followed up by games and fun. This years fun game -- Map It! Any geography nut would be a big fan of this game...it was so much fun!

Lots of cuddles and movie time to enjoy our Christmas celebration up north.
