Public speaking is not my forte, but when I was asked to speak at our schools' baccalaureate, I didn't feel like it was an honor I could turn down. I spent the year pushing my freshmen to get outside of their comfort zone and try new things as that is 'where the awesome happens.' So what kind of message was I sending by not practicing what I preach? I hope it served as a good message to my children (and students) that growth comes from challenging yourself and that, regardless of age, you should constantly strive to grow.
It was a great reminder that family support goes both directions. My children support me as much as I try to support them. A little note taped to my steering wheel the morning of the speech, the best advice a girl could ask for.
The class of 2016 chose a phenomenal student speaker as well. It was such a privilege to be able to spend the last 4 years with this class, I am hopeful this guy will return to be one of my colleagues some day.
